The best cookery books are well worn. My Puffin ‘Cooking Is a Game You Can Eat’ by Fay Maschler (1975) is barely a few sheets held together by risotto, or something.

Here’s a good thing to do with potatoes and cabbage. We think the cabbage is the squeak.

Ingredients

4 or 5 cooked potatoes
steamed or left over cabbage (or sprouts)
1 egg
salt and pepper
butter for frying
a handful of flour

Method

Put the potatoes and cabbage in a bowl and roughly mash them together. Add in an egg and seasoning. Mix. Pat them into patties then flour them and fry them in butter till golden. Great with eggs or bacon.
